Hit Combo: Is 2020 Over Yet?

I was just thinking: is 2020 the worst year ever? And historians with their facts said: LOL, no.

Some historians say that the truly worst year was 536. That’s the year a volcano erupted in Iceland and the sun dimmed for a year and a half, leading to a catastrophic global cold spell.

You could argue that 1918, the year of the Spanish flu pandemic, was the worst. Or that any of the years of the Great Depression, from 1929 to 1933, deserve the title.

You could say that in modern history, 1968 was the worst. In that year, the Vietnam War raged, Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy were assassinated, police beat protesters at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago and all over the country rebellions erupted in the streets.

Alright. No need to rub it in.

29 #Strafford Apts by Leif Vollebekk

Leif Vollebekk is a Canadian indie folk singer-songwriter and he dropped an even chiller cover of Bon Iver’s 29 #Strafford Apts. THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Jujutsu Kaisen is poised to take over the reigns as the new Shonen king. In October 2020, the latest volume (#13) and reprints of previous ones sold a record-breaking 10 million copies around the world, in both print and digital sales. The anime just started and helped bump up sales, but why am I telling you all this? Because Jujutsu Kaisen is awesome. I just finished reading Demon Slayer this summer and was really bummed out that there was a giant demon hole in my heart. No more. Jujutsu Kaisen feels like a spiritual successor do Yu Yu Hakusho. It’s gorgeously animated by the folks at Mappa, Yuji is a protagonist you want to root for (much like Urameshi, he’s rough around the edges, but a total sweetheart) and the colorful supporting cast just keeps pulling you in. Available now on Crunchyroll, however, the first episode is gratis on YouTube. Linked above.

Jungleland

Jungleland, directed by Max Winkler (yes, son of the Fonz), is the latest film based on the music of Bruce Springsteen. If you’re a fan you already know what I’m talking about, if not here’s the track. The film brings three very strong central performances and delirious poetic visuals, Jungleland is more of an atmospheric work above anything else, and at that level works beautifully. The tone is strange, sad and hypnotic.

Run The Jewels – No Save Point

As promised, Run The Jewels dropped the official video for No Save Point from the Cyberpunk 2077 soundtrack. Does that mean the game comes out this year? No. But it also doesn’t mean it doesn’t come out because investing in producing a music video with a popular band like RTJ isn’t cheap.

The Eric Andre Show Season 5

Cult favorite The Eric Andre Show is back for a 5th season and it’s still the wackiest show on TV? It feels weird to say that, but it’s true. It’s on cable and not on a streaming service even though it looks and walks and quacks like some obscure comedy project nobody watches on YouTube TV. You can watch a whole episode on, gasp, YouTube.
