Review: RATATAT’s New Album – Magnifique

The first thing that came to mind while listening to Magnifique’s “Intro” was Queen. I couldn’t help but hear “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Killer Queen” which started the album off on the right foot with me.  The flow through the tracks was remarkable and couldn’t be smoother yet the band is able to keep listeners awake by transitioning from soft, swaying “Magnifique” that could easily accompany a hammock on the beach to “Abrasive” which is almost a mix between pop and punk at it’s finest (don’t forget the synthesizers and accented guitar riff).

Mike Stroud mentioned in an interview how RATATAT wanted to “bring the focus back to guitars” and that’s a perfect summation of the album.  The musicians remind us of all the different sounds and feelings that can be coaxed out of that wonderful instrument and allow listeners to really focus on the emotion conveyed through the music in each song. Listen to “Abrasive” below!

The new album is due out on Friday July 17th through XL Recordings.
