Northside Film is here! There are tons of fantastic films screening today through Thursday, but you can’t miss the films from our DIY Film Competition.
The Northside DIY Film Competition showcases the finalists of our open call for recent, independent filmmaking. The winning feature will be chosen by our amazing panel of jurors, including Joana Vicente, Parker Posey, Ira Sachs, Matthew Grady and Kentucker Audley, while the winning short will be selected by the screening audience.
The lineup for the competition includes:
MONDAY
Ya Wooto
See the world premiere of this documentary centered around Sylvain, who works at a “burette” (or bar) in Burkina Faso. The film gives a glimpse of drinking and and bar culture in the West African country.

Human Geography
A story of unrequited love in which a young man follows a girl from Boston to New York. Human Geography maps the intertwined and complex network of connections, casual friendships and love triangles that keep Alex a perpetual arm’s length away from Nyle. Perfect for fans of Joe Swanberg and Andrew Bujalski.

TUESDAY
Natural Life
This amazing experimental documentary is a visual experience entirely comprised of split-screen images. The doc challenges inequities in the U.S. juvenile justice system by depicting the stories of five individuals who were sentenced to Life Without Parole for crimes they committed as youth.

WEDNESDAY
Flood Tide
A group of artists and musicians living in a small, post-industrial town chase jobs, struggle with bills, and use art and music to build their own small world. The film is a collabo with the Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea, a project built by a group of artists and performers who floated seven large sculptures down the Hudson River.

THURSDAY
i hate myself :)
This is the epitome of DIY filmmaking. The documentary centers around director Joanna Arnow’s yearlong dysfunctional romantic relationship with poet James Kepple, that quickly turns into a complex commentary on societal repression, sexuality and self-confrontation through art.
