Providence, RI garage punk trio Atlantic Thrills have just put out an intriguing psychedelic new single “Vices” (which can be listened to below via SoundCloud), which is the title track of their upcoming album that will be out via Almost Ready Records on December 4th.
The signature guitar riff in “Vices” sounds vaguely Indian in nature. The kind of scale used sounds like it could have originated from that region anyway. At the same time however it is very much a driving surf rock song that can be mixed in with all the best of psychedelic tunes. One of my favorite pieces of the song’s construct however is not the guitar or the vocals, but actually the bass. It sounds like it is telling its own little story for those who are willing to listen. Stereogum goes into further detail, saying:
Its title-track and leading single is a solid example of what they excel at doing: combining gritty electric guitar work with beachy, beer-soaked vibes. But unlike their previously more buoyant track “Bed Bugs,” “Vices” aches with yearning and disquietude as Dan Tanner and Eric Aguiar sing out, “So won’t you tell me / What can I do?”
If you’re looking for something that is fun yet intriguingly different you have come to the right place.
