Toro y Moi may have released a less than stellar album this year, that ditched his electronic R&B sound he became known for, but that hasn’t stopped him from releasing a string of tracks that is more reminiscent of Les Sins (Chaz’s dance side project) than Toro. The newest addition to the bunch is “Pitch Black” ft. Rome Fortune and is the best of the four so far. “room for 1zone” saw Chaz head in a new direction with a trap inspired rhythm and sounding nothing like anything off What For? “Pitch Black” finds Chaz heading into darker unexplored territory as Pigeons and Planes point out “opening with some clubby synths that sound straight out of an Arca soundtrack,” before it changes into crooning R&B synths, almost a throwback to his earlier work.
Have to wonder why Chaz has been dropping these songs lately and without explanation other than a “samantha” and a note explaining “forgot to send this to mastering… :/.” Is this a preview of what is about to come from Toro y Moi or scraps from his fourth LP that eventually turned into the guitar driven What For? Chaz has said in interviews that he’s tired of producing electronic R&B music and “constantly making electronic music, but I’m not going to release it.” Whatever the case I hope he ditches his guitar driven act soon and heads more in this direction. Listen to the stellar new track below.
