London based R&B singer Nao has just premiered a chilled out new club track single “Bad Blood” (which can be listened to below via SoundCloud) that is the first single from her upcoming debut full length album on Little Tokyo Recordings.
“Bad Blood” has a distinctly 90’s R&B vibe to it. It can easily find its way into your chill-out playlist. The vocal harmonies and deep soothing bass have a way of freeing one from the mental and emotional stress that they face every day. It is a rather strange, but wonderful feeling. Pitchfork goes into further detail, saiyng:
Some of that waywardness is located in her voice: supple, evasive, and dipping into word sounds like fingers into a full paint can. Some of it is located in the words, which are phonetically ripe and poetically elusive: her first lines on “Bad Blood” are “You’re a holiday/ A glass of ocean slipping down my throat.”
And some of it is in the sculpted production, which surrounds a handful of warm, textured sounds with chilly room tone. In between each drowsy drum kick, there is a pocket of silence, as insinuating as a cocked eyebrow across a bar.
“Bad Blood” while retro in approach has a lot of its own forward thinking merits. Personally I’m interested to see what the rest of Nao’s album will sound like.
