On June 3rd through Carpark Records, indie powerhouse Speedy Ortiz is releasing their newest four-song EP, Foiled Again. It is said not be a companion to their previous album, but more of an addition to their previous album, Foil Deer. With the news of the new EP came a new track entitled “Death Note.” Judging on this, what can we expect for the upcoming EP?
The instrumentation is sharp and powerful with big crescendos, booming drum beats, and strong yet satisfying reverb of the guitars. The lyrics echo as if you have your best friend in the room, discussing the nature of creativity, inspiration, and catharsis. The name of the track is referential to the anime of the same name, a story about writing as a form of release.
Sadie Dupuis had this to say about the song’s origin:
The song is about writing through your depression as a way to get better, and how in that way a death note can be kind of love letter to yourself.
