“Avant Gardener (Courtney Barnett Cover)” by Gordi
Jagjaguwar will release Gordi’s debut EP this spring. Andrew Stevens said, “[Gordi’s] songs keep one foot in traditional songwriting and the other in the future. Gordi’s musical instincts began on the ivories at an early age by virtue of her piano teacher mother” (Jagjaguwar). Her love for the piano prompted Gordi to expound on Courtney Barnett’s track “Avant Gardner.” Stevens said, “Accompanying her voice with just a piano, Gordi gorgeously slows and stretches the song out, iving on a new appreciation for Barnett’s incredible lyrics” (Jagjaguwar).
Chris DeVille noted Gordi’s originality; he said, “Gordi is Sophie Payten, a 22-year-old singer-songwriter from rural Australia, and holy shit is she good at making music” (Stereogum). Her debut album, Clever Disguise, is to release this spring. iTunes says Clever Disguise will be released on 13 May 2016. Currently, the track “Can We Work it Out” is available for$1.29, and the five track album is set at only $4.99.
