“Lake by the Ocean” by Maxwell from BlackSUMMERs’ night
Seven years ago, Maxwell released the first BlackSUMMERs’night, but mums been the word until now! Jazz Monroe said, “…Maxwell cancelled a tour [back in 2012] due to vocal swelling and hemorrhaging, and the record never came out” (Pitchfork). Now, however, Maxwell has released his lyrical video for “Lake by the Ocean.” Monroe quoted Maxwell on the track; he said, “Basically, the song represents falling in love after a very tough trial period in life and finding contentment in the smallest things next to the biggest things” (Pitchfork).

During an interview from 2009, Ryan Dombal gave Maxwell the 5-10-15-20 treatment – searching for his musical inspiration at key ages. For age 10, Maxwell noted that Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing” really moved him. Maxwell said that he did not understand the words, but the beat was good – it made people want to dance. The dancing brought age groups together; Maxwell said, “…kids aren’t naturally prone to liking the same things as grown-ups” (Pitchfork). Click HERE to read the full interview.
Shenequa Golding quoted Maxwell, in her piece from 7 February 2016, with another ‘word-of-wisdom’ from Marvin Gaye. Maxwell read Gaye’s biography, Divided Soul, when he was seventeen-years old. Maxwell was inspired by Gaye’s career advice who said, “You can rush to fail, or you can take your time to succeed” (Vibe). Maxwell noted his new sound to be fresh and different.
