I actually respect Spielberg more for his decision of pulling the walkie talkies out of E.T., unlike his long time collaborator, George Lucas, he admits that adding shit to movies is wrong. I wish he had that epiphany when they were working on the last Indiana Jones. You know, the that shall never be counted. “I was disappointed in myself,” Spielberg said in September 2011. “I was overly sensitive to some of the criticism E.T. got from parent groups when it was first released in ’82 having to do with Eliot saying ‘penis breath’ or the guns, and I thought [if I change some things] … it was OK for a while, but I realized what I had done was I had robbed people who loved ‘E.T.’ of their memories of ‘E.T.'”* Last time I’ve seen E.T. was when they released the edited version and, like when I first saw it as a kid (E.T. was the first movie I watched in a movie theater), it was my brother, my mother and I, though this time I got the tickets, something I couldn’t do as a toddler. *(The quotes are from a discussion after a 2011 screening of “Raiders of the Last Ark,” was pieced together from coverage on the event from AV Club and Slashfilm.)
